March 5-7 2010 => Forging Colonial Period Patch Knives with Kim Thomas

Availability: 2 seats remaining

Class Description

In this class we will forge a patch knife of the colonial period.  We will forge our knives from old files or buggy springs.  Students may bring their own or it will be provided.  There are many small but important techniques that must be followed to properly forge a knife of any size.  Each student will learn these procedures. We will discuss what is going on inside the metal as we forge.   After forging the student will grind harden and temper his knife.  Again there will be a discussion on what is happing to the metal when hardening and tempering.   We will then put a handle on our blades and pour a pewter nose cap on our knife.  When finished each student should have a nice patch knife and the skills to forge other knives of their choosing.  Each student is asked to bring his own handle material.  (Antler, Bone or Wood)  (Suggestion on woods to use Curly maple, Walnut or Hickory.)

Note: I will bring extra with me just in case.

SPECIAL OFFER: Kim will give away a damascus knife from his collection to one of the students in the class!!! All students will have their name put in the hat and the lucky winner will go home with a great piece!!!
